wine-wine bottles

by @ 7:09 pm. Filed under home improvment

It is always amazing to me what people decide to save and what they decide to make art projects out of. Each year I go to a few arts and crafts shows, just to see what creative things people will come up with. There are so many times when I say to myself why didn’t I think of that. Each sale I go to I see an idea that I think I can duplicate at home, but by time I get home some of the details of how the item looked escape me. The craft shows are getting very particular of how much time you spend looking at the items. They do not allow cameras of sketch pads, so that people cannot steal ideas.

This year there were several crafters that used wine bottles in their projects. I think the popularity of wine has caused people to consider some use for the empty wine bottles. One project involved an amber colored bottle. The label was kept intact. A strand of small twinkle lights was fed into the bottle through a small hole that was created at the bottom of the bottle. The cork was placed back in the bottle and a clump of artificial grapes were hung around the neck of the bottle. When it was plugged in the lights were quite pretty. I was with my sister at this craft sale. She liked the wine bottles so much that she purchased one for twenty five dollars. As we continued going from booth to booth we came across another vendor with the same idea. His bottle did not have the hole in the bottom; instead the plug in for the lights came out of the top. A slice was made in the cork to accommodate the cord. This bottle was being sold for fifteen dollars. My sister learned that even at craft sales it pays to comparison shop.

Another art project utilizing wine bottles used clear bottles. This crafter used a funnel to layer the dry ingredients for cookies into the wine bottles. She then tied a wooden spoon unto to the bottle with a ribbon along with the rest of the ingredients needed to make a batch of cookies. I had seen this same idea using other containers, but this was the first time I had seen it in wine bottles. My sister and I agreed that this was one project that we could remember how to do once we returned home.

On the way back to my sister’s house she stopped at the liquor store and bought a bottle of wine. She said she wanted to get started on her art project, but first she was going to empty the bottle of wine.

PARTY-decorating with balloons

by @ 6:48 pm. Filed under home improvment

When most people have a party, the balloons are sort of thrown in as an afterthought. They may decorate with balloons, but they usually think that it is enough to scatter them around to create a festive atmosphere. This is because balloons are so versatile. They don’t make a mess, they can be moved to and fro without a problem, and they even look good lying on the ground. This is why I think it’s a shame that people don’t put much more thought into decorating with balloons. There are just so many possibilities!

The only time when decorating with balloons is a priority is when someone is sick. People often buy festive balloon bouquets for their loved ones, hoping that the bright colors will help. I have always thought that decorating with balloons makes a lot more sense than decorated with flowers. In this age of chemical sensitivity, many people are actually allergic to flowers. The aroma itself is enough to set them sneezing. And besides, flowers wilt after only a few days. Decorating with balloons is a much better idea. If you have well made, high-quality balloons, they can hang around for weeks!

In my own home, I like to take decorating with balloons to a higher level. I use balloons for everything. I’m an artist, and I even incorporate balloons into my work. If you shellac balloons, you can decorate with them and they will last forever. Another technique for decorating with balloons is to use them to make masks. If you blow up the balloon and then cover it with papier-mâché, you already have a well formed mask. All you have to do is put some eyes and a mouth on it, and you have an instant homemade decoration.

Of course, one of my favorite ways to decorate with balloons is to use them outside. On a nice summer day with the breeze blowing, what looks better than balloons tied to a deck and just blowing in the wind? Nothing looks quite like it! Decorating with balloons can create the perfect backdrop for a nice summer day. You can drink iced tea, chat about this and that, and just watch the decorative balloons blow in the air. Best of all, when you’re done with them you can give the decorating balloons to your kids, or to other neighborhood children. Kids always love to get a balloon!

golf-Golf Balls

How to swing a golf club like Tiger WoodsGolf Balls

If you play golf, you know the importance of having the right golf balls. Because I am not an avid golfer myself, I often will use whatever ball is given to me. My dad and my husband however, are very particular about the type of golf balls they use when they go to play. They claim that each one is made differently, and that there are certain balls that work better for them than others. I don’t understand it, but I guess I really don’t have to.

My husband even told me that golf balls made for women are often different than the ones made for men. While I understand that a woman may not be able to hit the ball in golf net quite as hard as a man, I don’t understand why they would have to make a different ball for each of us. To me, I think people spend too much time blaming the golf balls for their bad scores, than perhaps thinking they need to do more work on their golf swing. Whatever the case may be, there really are golf balls out there for everyone.

If you are thinking of buying golf now golf balls for the golfer in your life, make sure you are buying the correct ones. Before I realized that there were certain golf balls my dad would not use, I would just buy him whenever I found on the shelf. I have since seen these golf balls stacked up in his closet, and I know they will probably never see the light of day. I have since learned what he likes, and what he does not like, and I make sure I buy exactly what he wants to use.

The best thing about golf balls, if you don’t lose them all, is that they can have a second life. Though you may only want to use newer balls when you go to the golf course, you can keep your old ones for practice. You may even find the driving range in your area will take your old balls from you, and they can use them for their customers. Most of the balls you find at a driving range are indeed old balls, but they are perfect for that type of practice. So if you have a stack of old golf balls and you don’t know what to do with them, take them down to your local driving range. They may want to take them off your hands.

Road trips

by @ 11:42 am. Filed under travel

Traveling can be an utter blast. That is of course, if you know where you’re going. Although it can be exciting to just tackle the highway with no destination in mind other than cool new places, it’s not so great when you can’t find your way back home. This is why modern-day road trips require something a bit more advanced than a paper road map that smacks you in the face every time you attempt to adjust or fold it. What you need is a GPS navigation system. Fortunately these are available in any electronics store now days. So if your vehicle didn’t come standard with one, no worries. The next time you hit the highway, you’ll know the best route to anywhere you please.

We all recall a few past road trips as children. Some of them probably consisted of our folks getting lost and/or confused. If your family was anything like mine, your father would drive most of the time, while your mother struggled endlessly with a map. The whole time this was going on, you were probably fighting in the back seat with your sibling or jamming to a Walkman. Yeah, sound familiar yet? Anyway, this is pretty much how road trips went for our family. One of my favorites was to the Mall of America. We were driving from Elkader, Iowa all the way up through Minnesota. It wasn’t too bad overall. Although once we got close to the mall, my father refused to acquire directions from anyone around. Fortunately we finally found it with the trial and error process. Thank God! A new GPS system would have taken us straight to this location without effort. Where were these back then?

Is it time for your next adventure yet? Plan your road trips using the GPS. This makes things so much easier. Personally I like to use both when heading out on crazy road trips with the family. It’s nice to have the device and hard copies to resort to if need be. One aspect you will want to pay attention to when planning road trips is the route. There are different routes to many places. Are you looking for the shortest one or the scenic one? Just some food for thought. Happy tripping!

Darwin Australia

Darwin Australia

The Northern Territories is fortunate in having a famous city as its capital. Darwin Australia sits at the tip of the country, the most populous city in the state with an estimated population of over 109,000. It has a tropical climate with a dry and a wet season, and has to endure thunderstorms and cyclones. The worst recorded cyclone occurred in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy hit, destroying many buildings and fifty people died. The city was re-constructed with stronger building materials.

The city is unique in being the only Australian city to be attacked in a war. Japanese air raids took place during World War II, the worst was in 1942 just three months after the attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. A memorial to the victims was erected in the city.

Named after the British naturalist Charles Darwin, the city’s main industries are tourism and mining. Darwin Australia went through a boom period when gold was discovered in the 1880s. It was officially upgraded to a city in 1959. Its port is also important to the economy of the area, exporting cattle, minerals and gas. The area is traditionally home to the military with a large Army and Navy Base.

A truly cosmopolitan place, there are a large number of Indigenous Australians and South East Asians who have migrated. Citizens include people from Vietnam, Papua, China, Greece and Italy. There are also several British and Irish residents. The Chinese New Year is enthusiastically celebrated in Chinatown. The people of Darwin Australia like to work and play. It’s good fishing country and they are keen supporters of the local horse races and rodeos. The Darwin Festival is an annual celebration of music, film, theater, dance and comedy acts.

Recent building developments have included the Wharf Precinct, which contains shops, entertainment, and a convention and exhibition center. There are also excellent swimming facilities. Darwin Australia may be at the extreme Northern Coast but it is not isolated in any way. It’s a city with a small town feel and people from all corners of the globe have made a home there. The resident’s battle against the often hostile weather conditions and the city makes an important contribution to the economy and the culture of the country. No air raids or cyclones could keep this place down and the future looks secure for this industrious heart of the North.

Car Window

Car Window

If there is one thing that drives me nuts is when I can’t see through my car window. My husband smokes, so there is always some sort of gook on the window, and because he always has the car, it builds up by the time I get to it. It is almost impossible to get the windows clean like I want them, and there is never enough time to get them cleaned anyway. If I go on a trip with my car, I have to set aside an entire afternoon just to clean the car.

On my last car trip, the car window in the back had a haze on it, and I didn’t know it until I was in a strange city in the middle of the night. Not only did I not know where I was going, I couldn’t see out the back. The little bit of gunk on the car window diffused the light to the point where I couldn’t see. The side windows were a little better, but the front window was the worst. The headlights seemed twice as bright and I ended having to pull over and wash the windows. It took me an hour.

If you are going away, don’t skip cleaning your windows. I tend to make that mistake when going on shorter trips. Perhaps it’s just me, but smudges on a car window in my car are enough to drive me mad. I can’t even stand rain on the windshield. I have a friend who will drive for ten minutes after it starts raining before she starts her wiper blades, and even then, there are so many dead bugs on her car window that it just makes a mess and I can’t see. I don’t know how she drives like that.

Perhaps I am just a freak, but this is how I go. I might be more scared of driving than I think I am, and that might be why I can so weird about having a clean car window no matter which direction I have to look. I’m not so picky about my home windows, and there are times when I laugh when I see how dirty they have gotten. I chalk it up to one of those weird things about me that my husband just has to live with. I guess there could be worse things that wanting to have a clean car window.
