Have you ever experienced people giving you more advise that you really wanted? At these times people mean well; however there bombardment of thought and ideas can be more detrimental then helpful. I experienced this recently when I left my job and career of twenty five years to do something different. I had worked as a social worker for that time span and was feeling that I needed to take a break from the emotional turmoil of dealing with other peoples issues, crisis’s and problems on a day to day basis. I hate the term burned out, but I guess that is what I was. I wanted to do something completely different. I knew I had skills in many areas; however when you do not have the experience or education to back that up it is hard to convince a perspective employer to give you an interview. I was trying to come up with small business ideas so I could be self employed. When I mentioned this to people they either discouraged me by stating all the headaches that go with self employment, or they told me a number of small business ideas that they had considered. Although some of the advice was sound, I wanted this venture to be mine. Through the years I have done many different crafts. Working with yarns, beads and the sewing machine was my way of working through the stress of dealing with people all day long. There have been many times when people have seen my handiwork and have told me that I could sell my creations. I had given away a great share of the things that I had made as gifts; however I had many pieces of jewelry, several quilts, multiple quilted pillows and several afghans. I had also started making knit purses as well as canvas bags. Of all the small business ideas that I had considered the idea of a craft boutique was the one that I thought was the most feasible. I thought I could have my own things displayed, have an area for consignment craft items and a line of quality gift items. I also love to bake so I thought I could sell baked items in addition to the other things. We live in a resort area so there are many visitors that come to the area. A small town four miles from our house has several gift shops and has specialized in drawing people to the community with special shopping event through the year. I spoke with several of the business owners about my small business ideas. They thought a shop like this would be a great compliment to the existing shops. There was a space to rent that had a kitchen area that has passed state inspection where I could make the baked goods. I have decided that I am going to rent the space for six months and see what happens. If things do not go well I will not be out a great deal of money and if they take off I will extend the lease. It will be a nice change of pace.

A Successful entrepreneur ?
A Successful Entrepreneur When I was in high school I was in the Business club. I’m not sure why, because I really wasn't ever planning to start my own business or work in the business field. I guess I just wanted something to do, and my friends were all involved. I remember going to a Future Business Leaders Of America competition of some sort, and because I was a new member, they just put me where they needed someone. I ended up having to take a skills test about how to be a successful entrepreneur. Though I’m not sure how it happened, I ended up scoring very high. common sense than anything. You can’t discount education, of course, but there is something to be said for just being observant about people in general. You can learn a lot about people just by watching them, and a successful entrepreneur can learn a lot just by deciding to make knowing how people tick a priority. If you know how people work, think, and live, you are going to be more successful in just about anything you do. A successful entrepreneur might have more trouble coming up with the perfect business idea. That is what can make or break you first and foremost. If you are selling a product or service that no one really wants, you aren’t going to get very far. You also need to have a good business education behind you to be a successful entrepreneur, though there are some who are highly successful in business who have not had much of an education beyond high school. author Sindre Brudevoll

If you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to know the market, and you have to know how to fine-tune your ideas into something great. Look for holes in the market in your area, and find out what people need. Sometimes, people don’t miss something because they don’t know it exists. If you have the right idea, people will end up needing you, and you will become a successful entrepreneur. Don’t jump in lightly, but use common sense. Give the people what they want and they will come to you. Some people just seem to have a sense for business success, and they are good at whatever they do. If you have an idea but don’t think you are one of those people, find one to be a partner.

family reunions?
My sister and I have discussed going into business together for many years. We have talked about a variety of things. We both love to cook and entertain. I also love to research family histories. We decided that we would start a catering business that would specialize in family reunions. For an added fee we would complete a family history as well as search out lost family members. Our husbands thought we wanted to cater to too specific a market, but we soon discovered that there are many people that wanted to utilize our services. apart and one was for one hundred people and the other was for eighty. They were both held in a local church fellowship center. The fellowship centers had full kitchens so we prepared the food on sight. We cooked the day before the event as well as the same day. These family reunions were for three generations and did not extend out beyond first cousins. During the second family gathering one of the guests approached us and asked if we would be able to cater a larger party. She said that she and a cousin were trying to combine two family reunions that have taken place over several years. The reason that there were two gatherings held was that out of a family of thirteen children half went to live with one set of grandparents when their parents died and the other half moved in with the other set of grandparents. Half of the children were forced to change their last name to their mother’s maiden name. The two groups lived several hundred miles apart in two different states. This woman said that she had been doing some research, but did not have time to complete it. She agreed to hire me to complete the research. She also wanted my sister and me to combine the two family reunions and cater for the large group of two hundred and twenty people.

We now have so many requests to cater and plan family reunions that we have had to turn down some of the business. All of our business has been word of mouth. It is very rewarding being part of the family reunions because we get to watch relatives be reunited that in some cases have never met as adults. We feel our business goes well beyond providing food for a gathering, we help bring people together.
