Traveling can be an utter blast. That is of course, if you know where you’re going. The Northern Territories is fortunate in having a famous city as its capital. Darwin Australia sits at the tip of the country, the most populous city in the state with an estimated population of over 109,000. It has a tropical climate with a dry and a wet season, and has to endure thunderstorms and cyclones. The worst recorded cyclone occurred in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy hit, destroying many buildings and fifty people died. The city was re-constructed with stronger building materials.

The city is unique in being the only Australian city to be attacked in a war. Japanese air raids took place during World War II, the worst was in 1942 just three months after the attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. A memorial to the victims was erected in the city.

Named after the British naturalist Charles Darwin, the city’s main industries are tourism and mining. Darwin Australia went through a boom period when gold was discovered in the 1880s. It was officially upgraded to a city in 1959. Its port is also important to the economy of the area, exporting cattle, minerals and gas. The area is traditionally home to the military with a large Army and Navy Base.

A truly cosmopolitan place, there are a large number of Indigenous Australians and South East Asians who have migrated. Citizens include people from Vietnam, Papua, China, Greece and Italy. There are also several British and Irish residents. The Chinese New Year is enthusiastically celebrated in Chinatown. The people of Darwin Australia like to work and play. It’s good fishing country and they are keen supporters of the local horse races and rodeos. The Darwin Festival is an annual celebration of music, film, theater, dance and comedy acts.

Recent building developments have included the Wharf Precinct, which contains shops, entertainment, and a convention and exhibition center. There are also excellent swimming facilities. Darwin Australia may be at the extreme Northern Coast but it is not isolated in any way. It’s a city with a small town feel and people from all corners of the globe have made a home there. Though you probably won’t find me camping any longer, I used to do it at least once a year with my husband. His band used to host a yearly festival, and we camped for the weekend leading up to the big show. They no longer do the festival, and during those years I learned to loath sleeping on the ground. I don’t mind camping so much as I mind what my back feels like in the morning. Being out with nature and spending the day around a fire with friends is great, but not being able to walk for a week is not something I want to go through again. I also learned that you have to buy special camping cookware when you go, and I learned this buy ruining most of my good pans.

It seems like common sense, but when you are packing at the last minute, as I am known to do, you don’t think about such things as camping cookware. You just suddenly think that you need to take something with you, and you look through what you have in your own home. I had seen camping cookware in the store as we were preparing to go, but I saw no reason to spend the money on it. This was especially true when we weren’t sure how the festival was going to go, and we thought that might be the only time we went camping.

When I used my home pots and pans as camping cookware I ruined quite a few things. One was my favorite boiling pot and I have not been able to replace it. This pot was something my mom gave me, and she had had it from many years before. It was something that was no longer made but it worked like a dream. Because I didn’t buy special camping cookware I had to take that with me. After just one day there were beans burned to the bottom, and I was never able to completely get the burned on stuff to come off. I had to throw it away.

I have since looked at camping cookware but have had no reason to buy any. We don’t do the festival any longer, and we don’t go camping otherwise. Perhaps in the future when our family is older and we have more time we will go camping again, but for right now it’s not looking good. I will also have to get a really great camping bed along with the camping cookware or I’m just not going. I can go for a hike if I want to without cramping up my back for weeks. Until then, I know it’s out there if I need it, I just know I won’t be needing it any time soon.

Have you ever noticed how much we work here in America? It’s actually pretty ridiculous if you sit down and think about it. First of all, have you ever been to a European country? These folks know how to do it right and get it done. They don’t do that whole 9-5 garbage. They work a little and then they eat and socialize. They put in much less time than we do here in teh states. This is what life should be about. I personally think that we Americans spend far too much of our lives in a cubicle or answering to a boss. This is ridiculous and lame. After all, how many lives do you get? My guess is about 1. From where I’m standing that’s not really very many. So, do you want to spend that entire time slaving away, or do you demand more vacations? Personally I would like a nice spa vacation.

Who could use a spa vacation right about now? Ha, that’s about the funniest thing you’ll hear all day. Heck, it’s the funniest thing I’ve said all day. The truth is, and I know a few manly men out there will deny it; a spa vacation would be heaven. Lie back on a nice relaxing bed and let a professional massage away your daily stresses. Smirk with bliss as your feet and back are kneaded gently. Then it’s onto the facial where your mug is utterly pampered by gentle scrubs, masks and moisturizers. Are you having fun yet? This of course is not the end of your spa vacation. You are here for an entire week, right? That’s the way to do it! Soak in a luxurious Jacuzzi and relax in a mud bath. Okay, so you don’t have to do the mud bath thing if it bothers you, but it’s actually quite amazing. I highly recommend it.

Barcelona is a town with a history that like a good Catalan red wine is both rich and dark. Its foundations stretch back to at least the 15th century BC, if not earlier. Like so much of ancient Europe the Romans founded the first semblance of the town we know today as Barcelona. In the centuries that followed Barcelona was invaded by many powerful groups of people including the Visigoths, the Moors and the Muslim ruler Al Mansur. Plundered, conquered, nearly destroyed and under siege for much of its life, it comes as no surprise that Barcelona is also a city with a particular penchant for civil rights and freedom. Where the fight for liberty, and some evidence of both local and national political justice and peace, would eventually lead to Barcelona becoming one of Spain’s largest strongholds for those who believed in the idea of anarchism.

In the most basic of essences anarchism is a system of political beliefs which dictates that a society (or group of people) will be free from laws, police, governments and other forms of imposing authority. Instead of this type of governed society anarchists feel that a libertarian culture should be founded around mutual cooperation and help amongst the members of the anarchist society.

When and what exactly planted the first seeds of anarchism in the people of Spain and the city of Barcelona is hard to say. Perhaps it was a result of the industrial revolution or a way of revolting against the stark rules and ideologies of Victorian Europe, not to mention the highly uneven distribution of wealth amongst the rich and the poor of Spain at the time. By the middle of the nineteenth century a visible anarchist movement had sprung up in Spain. At the turn of the twentieth century Spain had the largest anarchist community of any European nation, with the biggest following coming from Barcelona’s industrial workers, who in 1911 formed an anarcho-syndicalist trade union called the National Confederation of Trabajo, or the “CNT”. This union was the only one that was willing to take on members who were not qualified or able to join other unions.

On the whole, the ideals of the CNT focused largely on overthrowing the ruling Capitalists of Spain. Yet almost as soon as it was founded divisions sprung up amongst members of the CNT, some of whom took to radical acts and crimes that today would be classified as acts of terrorism. A large part of what the CNT and Spanish anarchism were about was demonstrating their opposition to the way that Spanish workers – primarily those in the lower classes of society - were being treated. Strikes and demonstrations, meetings and rallies were exceedingly common ways for the anarchists to show their stances and beliefs.

Towards the end of the First World War, and in the years that immediately followed, Barcelona was home to many strikes and protests against the ever-increasing rate of joblessness and the continual slashes in many workers’ wages by factory owners. During this time the memory of a tragic uprising in 1909 which saw 6 people killed, 1, 700 charged with crimes and five executed for their alleged involvement with the uprising – including Francisco Ferrer, a well known Spanish free-thinker – was still fresh in the minds of the people of Barcelona as this is where the event had occurred.

In 1934 the CNT had some 1.5 million members and by the time the Spanish revolution began in 1936 this number had grown even larger. While it is nearly impossible to sum up the events of the Spanish Civil War that followed in a few lines, it can be defined as a conflict between the left wing parties of Spain (including anarchists, socialists, communists, and some republicans) and the right wing Nationalist party which was headed by the infamous Francisco Franco. By the end of 1939 Franco was successful in overthrowing the current Spanish Republican government and creating his own dictatorship. Thus the right-wing side had succeeded in winning the three year long civil war.

The Spanish Civil war may have officially ended, but the Second World War was just beggining and Franco’s power in Spain was to remain strong for decades to come. The reign of Franco’s government would not be shaken until the 1970’s, however by this time a great deal of the country’s left wing groups and anarchist parties had either been destroyed during the second world war, transformed into other groups or disbanded on the whole.

In the past thirty years Spain has seen continual freedom and rebirth, albeit with some setbacks, which may be a large part of why membership in groups such as the CNT has greatly declined. However, at the same time the CNT continues to exist today, and Barcelona is still considered to be Spain’s “anarchist hotspot”. While many thing both tragic and positive have come from Spain’s long history of fighting, civil unrest and anarchism, one thing is for sure - the beautiful city of Barcelona will forever be a city with an unshakeable will of its own.

They call Hong Kong the ‘City of Life’ because it has always been so vibrant and full of energy. It’s a city that’s both exotic and cosmopolitan making it a perfect destination for first time travelers to Asia. Being a former British colony, there’s enough English signs and people able to speak the language there to make it a user friendly place. At the same time, it’s foreign enough that tourists will definitely feel that they are not on a typical beach vacation. Even after the U.K. gave Hong Kong back to China, this Chinese government designated ‘Special Administrative Region’ has not lost its dynamics. The communist government realizes the importance of Hong Kong as an economic giant and is so far adhering to a two system coexistence for China. ‘Hong Kong’ means ‘sweet harbor’ in the Chinese Cantonese dialect which is fitting as there’s so much in the city to stimulate all of the senses.

There are actually two main areas of Hong Kong. One being the Hong Kong island itself and the other being the Kowloon peninsula which is on the mainland across the harbor. The new international airport is yet on another island and transit to the city can be via train, bus or auto. The bridge that connects to Kowloon is the world’s longest road and rail bridge.

Once in the city, one will realize that Hong Kong is a very busy place with people everywhere. It has one of the densest populations as most of the 6.5 million inhabitants live in high-rise buildings due to the lack of land available. In fact, one reason why there seems to be people on the streets during all hours including the evenings is because people there want to take a break from their tiny apartments and get outside for some space. Hotel accommodations are in every budget range on both the Kowloon and Hong Kong island sides. Getting across the harbor is fairly easy. One can take the harbor ferry which actually has different class levels (the higher levels are slightly more expensive but the views are better). There’s also an underground tunnel that taxi cabs can take and like many other major cities around the world, Hong Kong also has an underground subway transit system. This subway also goes underground beneath the harbor connecting the island to Kowloon. There are double decker buses in Kong Kong as well as double decker rail street cars over on the island. One way to see the various commercial districts on the island is to stay on the streetcar for an entire loop which will take riders right across the downtown areas including some of the street markets.

Hong Kong is a contrast of old and new. There are old temples and monasteries scattered throughout. But there is also that gigantic modern skyline of tall skyscrapers that will make most North American cities appear small. There’s even the world’s longest outdoor escalator here. A must do in Hong Kong is to go to the top of the mountain of Victoria Peak on the island either by bus, auto or a special tram they have there to see spectacular views of the entire region. There are also tours of the boat village where a local will take tourists around the bay in one of their boats. One thing that is very interesting to see in Hong Kong is the early morning exercise sessions in some of the local parks. Every morning, there are crowds of locals, many of them seniors, who meet up at the parks to exercise and do tai chi.

With over 9,000 restaurants, dining in Hong Kong is also an exciting experience. There are all types of international cuisine but of course, the Chinese fare is what most visitors come here for. From elegant dining to busy dim sum houses to street stalls, there’s so much variety of food that it’s impossible to sample everything. There are even the large floating restaurants which serve the freshest seafood catches.

Of course, there’s the shopping experience in Hong Kong. Being a duty free port, there are many bargains in Hong Kong especially for textiles and electronics. Hong Kong is famous for its custom tailors who can make up a new suit within a day or two. As for electronics, for some reason Hong Kong always receives the latest models first even before North America does. Browsing through the many outdoor markets for souvenirs is another favorite activity. Be aware that bargaining is common in the markets so it is recommended to get an idea of typical prices from the retail stores first before going for deals at the markets. Kowloon has a few specialty markets worth visiting including the jade market, bird market and flower market. One must be extra careful at the jade market because if the prices are too good to be true, the pieces are probably not real jade. The night market which operates only during evenings is also fun where there are all sorts of merchandise available from clothing to toys to gadgets. There may also be entertainment such as Chinese opera on the streets during the night.

The Po Lin monastery on Lantau Island near the airport has the world’s largest outdoor Buddha. Visitors climb the steps up to the statue and there are some nice views of the scenery up top. Lantau Island can be reached by ferry via local tour companies who will also take tourists to local fishing villages. Hydrofoil crafts can take casino enthusiasts to Macau which has also been returned back to the Chinese government. There are also tours into the New Territories beyond Kowloon to see more secluded temples and countryside farms as well as other shopping opportunities located in nearby Chinese mainland towns.

It’s incredible how much there is to see and do in Hong Kong even within its relatively compact geographical area. There are so much more exotic sights and cuisine there that one simply cannot experience at the usual North American Chinatowns. At the same time, Hong Kong is so easy to get around with its efficient modes of transportation and wide range of services available in English. Tourists will never feel too lost even in a high activity place like Hong Kong.

The money used in Costa Rica is called colons. You can change dollars into colons at the airports in San Jose and local banks. The exchange rates can be from the low 200s to 400s colons for each US dollar. (Now everywhere in Costa Rica you can buy or pay in US dollars, but I think things are cheaper if you pay in colons.) Other ways you might get colons is if you pay for something in US dollars, you will receive change in colons. During my stay at Costa Rica, I once paid a cab driver in US money, and I received change in the local currency. You should also make sure your dollars are not torn. Local banks and businesses do not accept torn US dollars. I tried to exchange a torn $50 bill, and the bank would not accept it!

-Bringing Money

On my trip I brought my money half in dollars and the other half in American Express cheques. When a traveler cheque is used there will be a commission fee.

When to visit/weather

Costa Rica has two seasons – the dry season and the green season (or rainy season). The dry season is from December to March. The dry season is the busiest time in Costa Rica. Prices are much higher and it is harder to find a place to stay. Now in the green season you will find much cheaper prices. The green season is from April to November. During the rainy season it generally rains for a few hours and then clears up.

Traveling within Costa Rica

Bus – You can catch one to most parts of the country. There are a few places where the bus comes only once a day though…

Cab – There are red cabs throughout the country. If the cab driver tells you the meter is broker, just get out. First it is illegal for a cab driver to drive with a broken meter in Costa Rica; secondly he might just be trying to rip you off.

Renting a Car – You can rent a car, but to me personally I would find driving in Costa Rica difficult, since I’m not from the country and it seems there are a lack of street signs. Also the prices for a car rental can be pretty expensive.

Local airlines – You can catch local flights to places throughout Costa Rica. They are regularly scheduled and reasonably inexpensive.

Cities and Towns

Cities in Costa Rica are San jose (The Capital) Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Jaco, Liberia, Manuel Antonio, park, Pochote, Puerto Limon, Puntarenas, Parismina, and Tamarindo.

Newfoundland has its own time zone called the Newfoundland Time Zone which is Greenwich Mean Time -3.5 hours. Labrador is in the Atlantic Time Zone which is Greenwich Mean Time -4 hours; it also observes Daylight Savings between the months of April and October when the difference is GMT -3 hours.

Newfoundland and Labrador has a total population of 512,930 (2001), of which 27,864 (2001) live on the mainland portion of Labrador and 485,066 (2001) live on the island of Newfoundland. The Avalon Peninsular, located at the South end of the Island, is the most populated area of Newfoundland and home to the Provincial capital, St John’s. The other principal cities of the Province are Mount Pearl and Gander all located on Newfoundland Island and Happy Valley-Goose Bay is in Labrador on the mainland. The Province is also dotted with many towns and fishing villages.

The coastline is very rugged and consists of coves, fjords and offshore islands. The interior is mostly covered with forest and barren rock; 31,340 square kilometers are covered by inland water. These geographical characteristics give the Province some great recreational opportunities in the wilderness with some amazing Parks and Ecological Sites.

Most of the Western part of the Island is made up of the Newfoundland Highlands which are part of the Appalachian region and elevations reach 814 metres. The South and East of the Island is mostly flat, although there are some hilly sections on the Avalon Peninsular. Apart from the Southeastern corner, Labrador is occupied by the Canadian Shield - mostly made up of ancient hard rock.

St. John’s is said to be the foggiest, wettest, snowiest and windiest of all the major cities in Canada. The locals apparently call it character-building! The average July temperatures in Newfoundland are 13 to 16 degrees Celsius, with the interior normally warmer than to coast. The January average temperature is -4 degrees although it could fall to -34 degrees Celsius. Heavy snowfall is common and annual precipitation averages about 44inches.

Labrador tends to be cooler with average July temperatures between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius and January about -18 degrees Celsius, it can be as cold as -51 degrees Celsius in Western Labrador. The annual precipitation varies from about 40 inches in the south east to 20 inches in the extreme north.

The Provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is led by the Honourable Danny Williams who is the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party. The Province is responsible for administering the Healthcare System which provides a basic care system for the Newfoundland and Labrador residents.

The Education System and the Driving Regulations are also regulated by the Province and have differences from other parts of Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador has a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 15 per cent. This is composed of both the Federal GST 7% and the Provincial sales tax 8% and is applied to the retail sale or rental of most goods and certain services in the Province. Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are subject to Provincial and Federal Taxation.

At some time, no doubt, upon our travels together, we will pass by this royal palace, where once upon a time a prince and princess used to live in happier days - namely the current heir to the throne and the now deceased Lady Diana, who became the Princess of Wales.

So you may ask, what on earth could be the direct connection between this Royal Palace and a revolution that was known as “Glorious”? Why glorious anyway, you may well ask? Well, there we are - the story gets longer and longer, and eventually disappears into the mists of time.

This royal palace, although nowadays no longer a principal royal residence, is still used by certain members of the royal family even after the recent death of the queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, the death of the Princess of Wales on 31st August 1997, and the departure of HRH Prince Charles, following the separation of the couple in 1992.

The idea of this palace came about with accession of the Prince of Orange, the Dutch Stadtholder, as our William III, who was the son of the eldest daughter, Mary, of the executed (yes executed, in 1646) King of Great Britain, King Charles I. Interestingly, William III was married to an English Princess, also called Mary, who was a daughter of Charles II’s brother the Duke of York, who himself became a King, namely James II. So reader, if you are thinking “but this makes them cousins”, then you are quite correct.

It was the very abdication of James II and the act of fleeing from Great Britain that brought his daughter back home as a Queen in her own right. So again reader, if you have perceived another apparent inconsistency, then you are right again: we did have two monarchs reigning in their own right at the same time! In fact the only time in British History. Thank God they were married - otherwise we would have another revolution and perhaps not such a glorious one. (Remember King Stephen and Matilda in the 11th century? Perhaps you don’t…)

Well, why was this revolution so glorious? The new King William III was invited to invade by the nobility, and this invasion and accession was entirely peaceful, as a result of the defection of most of the English army officers, including and especially one John Churchill. This change of leadership in our country lead to our war with France over the question the Spanish succession. This culminated in the Battle of Blenheim, hence Blenheim Palace being gifted, by the next Monarch, Queen Anne, to the newly created 1st Duke of Marlborough, the one and same John Churchill who had changed his allegiance from James II!!

So leadership in those was still as much in the hands of the monarch as Parliament. Incidentally it was from the need and struggle to finance this war that the Bank of England was created. Then, as today, banks seem to have far more to do with lending money than being the keepers of funds. But we digress from our original enquiries. Why was this Palace in Kensington created when there were already perfectly acceptable ones in Westminster?

Well there you are, the story becomes ever more unpredictable. Would you believe it the answer is pollution – yes, pollution. Am I being serious, am I being truthful? No, really I am! There was a very great pollution problem back in those old times 300 years ago. even before the days of the Industrial Revolution. Not from vehicles and modern machines, of course, but in those days every house had quite a number of fires. In fact, open fires were everywhere, causing far dirtier combustion than today’s relatively clean power machines.

So even in those days there was intensive smog in the areas around Westminster, and Kensington was regarded as a country area with wonderful fresh air. In fact the Duke of Nottingham’s house, which is what this was before its purchase in 1689, was probably fairly isolated, before the Court Circle of Ministers, advisers and supporters began building their dwellings around the new royal palace.

You maybe surprised to know that the designer of St Paul’s Cathedral was also asked to carry out much modification to the new palace, and this is still in evidence today. So in the middle of his 35-year (1675-1710) supervision of the rebuilding of the Cathedral, this great architect (not that he would have been known as that in the 17th century) was asked to effectively engineer a new royal residence. Wouldn’t be possible in today’s world of Euro laws trying to enforce 35 hour weeks, would it?

So now you are in the know, to a certain extent, about how the Glorious Revolution is connected to Kensington Palace, why the Glorious Revolution was thought to be so, and why Kensington Palace is situated where it is and why it was created in the first place. And if a Blue Badge Guide had not told you these things, would you have been thinking about them as you slid past Kensington Palace? Possibly like may of today’s young, you would only have thought of Kensington Palace in connection with our sad modern Princess of Wales and the carpet of flowers as far as the eyes could see, all around the Palace, in the days leading up to her funeral.

The European version of the Disney franchise was the second to open outside of America, after the theme park in Tokyo. Disneyland Paris comprises of Disneyland Park and the Walt Disney Studios Park. It struggled to gain sufficient visitors at first but expansion and new attractions have improved its prospects.

The theme parks share much the same characteristics at the different locations with some individual variations. The Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris has the familiar areas known to visitors. Main Street USA is a nostalgic look at small town life from a bygone age, with horse driven vehicles, arcades and shops, and a City Hall. Frontierland is a journey back to the Old West with a riverboat and Wild West heroes. The kids love Adventureland and the pirates and Indiana Jones. Discoveryland has a Jules Verne themed Mysteries of the Nautilus and an updated version of the Space Mountain roller coaster called Space Mountain: Mission 2.  This has a hill launch and two inversions and was the first version to have a music soundtrack. A railway stops at various locations.

In contrast to the theme park, the Walt Disney Studios Park focuses on the bread and butter industry that launched it, i.e. movies and television. This part of Disneyland Paris is divided into four areas, with tours, rides and themed boutiques. Visitors gain an insight into how animation is achieved at the Animation Courtyard. There is a studio tram tour, a tour of a typical television studio and an attraction called Armageddon: Special Effects. The exciting Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster features rock band Aerosmith as a theme. Plans for expansion have taken place and a new ride is scheduled to come on line in 2007 or 2008. Called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it is a simulated freefall ride based on the cult TV show, The Twilight Zone.

Always looking to bring visitors back for return visits, Disneyland Paris likes to keep up with the times in addition to featuring the old classics. The recent working partnership with the production studio, Pixar has resulted in a long list of movie hits. One of these is Toy Story and its sequel. In April 2006, a new attraction was added to Disneyland Park called Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast. It’s a 1930s themed ride and shooting gallery based on Toy Story 2. It may have had a rocky beginning, but Disneyland Paris looks set for the future, to infinity and beyond.
